Other regional sites in the event are being held at the University of Maryland, Michigan State University and the University of Texas.
The participation in a certified event by the Greyhounds is their first since they opened the 1997-98 season by visiting Florida State University for a first-round contest in the Preseason National Invitation Tournament (Nov. 17). The Seminoles were victorious (89-72) en route to losing in the championship final to Kansas.
Loyola and Navy are meeting for the second time in the last three seasons as the Midshipmen were the opponent in head coach Jimmy Patsos' first game at Reitz Arena on November 21, 2004. It was also the first season for current Navy head coach Billy Lange and the teams played an 89-86 up-and-down thriller to give Lange his first career win. The Midshipmen lead the series, 18-4.
The Greyhounds threw the uniforms on for the first time last Friday during the win over Catholic. Junior guard Gerald Brown (Baltimore, Md./Frederick Douglass HS) led the way with 29 points (11-20 FG, 3-5 3FG) and six rebounds. Sophomore guard Marquis Sullivan (Westminster, Md./Archbishop Spalding HS) was the only other player in double figures with 15 on 5-8 shooting from three-point range. Junior forward Michael Tuck (Toronto, Ont./Markham District HS) collected eight points and a team-high seven rebounds in just 23 minutes of action and freshman guard Brett Harvey (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown North HS) received the start and responded with eight points and a team-best four assists. Loyola was 58.8 percent from the field for the game (66.7 percent in the second half) and held a 35-24 rebounding advantage.
The weekend's games are the first two of four straight games being played away from Reitz Arena to open the season. Visits to Maryland-Baltimore County (Nov. 14) and American (Nov. 20) are on tap before the Greyhounds host Delaware on November 29 in a 7:30 p.m. start.
