Baltimore, Md. - Loyola College basketball coaches Jimmy Patsos and Candy Cage will throw out the first pitch at next Wednesday's Baltimore Orioles' game at Camden Yards. The first pitch, thrown out immediately proceeding Baltimore's game with the Toronto Blue Jays, will take place at 7 p.m.
"There is obviously a lot of excitement surrounding the Loyola men's basketball program this year," says Loyola Assistant Athletic Director Marty Kelly. "We're fortunate to have both Jimmy [Patsos] and Candy [Cage] throwing out the first pitch, and hope that the publicity that men's basketball has received will spill over to a women's program that in its own right has very high expectations for the 2004-05 season."
Coach Cage, in her fourth year as head women's basketball coach, returns four starters and 12 letterwinners from last year's squad. The women finished with a 14-15 overall record and a 9-9 conference mark, Cage's best season at Evergreen. They open the 2004-05 season at Delaware on Nov. 21.
Jimmy Patsos, who became Loyola's 20th head men's basketball coach on April 1 of this year, takes over a team that went 1-27 last season. Patsos, who worked as an assistant under Gary Williams at Maryland for the past 13 seasons, has already brought in six new recruits and a coaching staff that knows how to win. The men begin the year at Virginia Tech on Nov. 19.
Wednesday's game promotion at Camden Yards is what Kelly hopes to be the first of many more to come.
"We owe a lot to John Greeley and Matt Dryer at the Orioles for their help with this," adds Kelly. "We're looking forward to more co-promotional opportunities with not only the Orioles, but also the Baltimore Ravens down the road."
