Baltimore, Md. - Loyola Greyhounds men's basketball head coach Jimmy Patsos today announced the opponents and dates for the non-conference portion of the 2007-08 schedule. Spotlighting the 13-game slate are contests at NCAA Tournament teams Illinois and Kansas and participation in the eight-team Philly Classic which concludes at The Palestra over Thanksgiving Weekend.
"This is one of the most ambitious schedules we have undertaken since we have been here," Patsos said in making the announcement. "The quality of the non-conference opponents will prepare us for the always rugged MAAC schedule."
The 2007-08 season gets underway on Friday, November 9, with a game at local-rival Towson. That contest starts a stretch of seven games over 16 days, highlighted by four games as part of the inaugural Philly Classic. The first contest of the eight-team multi-team event finds 2007 Ivy League champion Pennsylvania visiting Reitz Arena on Sunday, November 11. Nine days later, the Greyhounds visit Seton Hall and the new Prudential Center in downtown Newark for the second game of the event. The final two games will be part of four doubleheaders spread out over two days at The Palestra, the fabled basketball arena in the heart of Philadelphia. The afternoon of Friday, November 23, finds Loyola taking on Howard with Drexel meeting Robert Morris in the other half of the bracket. Winners and losers meet the following afternoon. Penn, Seton Hall, Virginia and Navy play in the evening sessions both days.
In between the games as part of Philly Classic, Loyola will have home games against American (November 13) and Vermont (November 18). December begins with a visit to Mount St. Mary's on the first day of the month. The first weekend of MAAC contests follows the weekend of December 6-9. Following the break for exams, the Greyhounds travel to Dayton to take on the Flyers on December 22 and visit Illinois on December 28 after the Christmas break.
With the return of MAAC games to the schedule in January are a pair of non-conference contests. A Preseason Top 5 team in Kansas awaits on January 8 with a game at legendary Phog Allen Field House and three weeks later the Greyhounds return to Newark for a contest with New Jersey Institute of Technology. The final non-conference contests will be Saturday, February 23, when Loyola hosts a game from the pool of teams under consideration for the 2008 BracketBusters event, a made-for-television event pitting top mid-majors against each other. The opponent for the date will be announced during the regular season.
In addition to the 18 MAAC conference games, Loyola will participate in the 2008 MAAC Championship at the Times Union Center in Albany, N.Y., from March 7-10.
