TORONTO, Ontario - Nevell Provo, an incoming freshman for the Loyola University Maryland men's basketball team was one of 12 players named to Canada's U-19 Team that will compete at the FIBA World Championships later this month in Greece.
Provo, who signed a National Letter of Intent with the Greyhounds in April, and the Canadians will play in the Championships June 27-July 5 in Heraklion, Greece. The team enters the tournament ranked third in the FIBA Men's Age-Group rankings. Provo and the Canadian U-18 team finished second at last summer's FIBA Americas Tournament, the country's highest-ever finish at the event.
A native of Nova Scotia, Provo scored 18.9 points per game and averaged nine assists and 3.6 rebounds per contest while helping Pine Ridge Secondary School (Pickering, Ontario) to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSSA) Bronze Medal. It was the first time a sports team from Pine Ridge has medaled at an OFSAA Tournament.
He was named to the BioSteel All-Canadian Game following Pine Ridge's season.
Provo, a point guard, played in Canada's five games in last summer's FIBA Americas Tournament, averaging 2.4 assists as the team won four games in a row before falling to the United States in the title contest.
Canada is a member of Group C at this year's World Championships and will face Australia in its first game on Saturday, June 27. The Canadians will play Tunisia the following day and Italy on Tuesday, June 30. Click here for more details on the event.
