Winston-Salem, N.C. - Former Greyhounds forward Dan Ficke, a graduate of the Class of 2009, has accepted a position as the assistant coordinator of operations on the basketball staff of new Demon Deacons head coach Jeff Bzdelik at Wake Forest University. Ficke will receive his masters of business administration during Loyola graduation ceremonies on Saturday and then begin his responsibilities with the Demon Deacons.
Ficke's career was beset with injuries and he appeared in just 59 games during his four years. His only career start came in the New Year's Eve nationally televised appearance at No. 5 Duke as a senior. He scored 16 points during his junior season when he played an integral role in Loyola's eight wins during January due to injuries across the Greyhounds' front line. The Loyola teams that he was a part of won 64 games, including a Division I school-record 19 in 2007-2008.
The Englewood, Colo., native graduated with his bachelor's degree in December 2008 and immediately began his course work toward his advanced degree. He stayed in Baltimore this academic year to complete those studies and also coached the junior varsity team at Boy's Latin HS.
Ficke's appointment keeps Loyola ties at Wake Forest. The previous two head coaches prior to Bzdelik - the late Skip Prosser and Dino Gaudio - both are former Greyhounds head coaches and former assistant coach Dave Wojcik is a 1991 Loyola graduate who served under both men as a Greyhounds assistant, including under Prosser with the 1994 Greyhounds team that captured the MAAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
The 2010-2011 Greyhounds get underway Friday, November 12 when they host Drexel in Reitz Arena.
