Baltimore, Md. - Greyhounds freshman guard Brian Rudolph today was named an honorable mention Mid-Major All-Freshman selection by CollegeHoops.Net. The New Bedford, Mass., native was one of 22 student-athletes cited by the staff writers of the college basketball website.
A MAAC Rookie of the Year and six-time selection as the conference's Rookie of the Week, Rudolph was the starter at point guard for 17 of Loyola's 19 wins. The 5-11 guard handed out a team-high 143 assists while averaging 7.1 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. He finished the year shooting 43.9 percent from the field and 74.2 percent from the free-throw line.
Highlighting the selections was guard Patrick Mills of Saint Mary's College who was named Mid-Major Freshman of the Year. He leads a First Team quintet that includes Tennessee-Martin guard Marquis Weddle, guard Devin Gibson of Texas-San Antonio, Pepperdine forward Tyrone Shelley and forward Matt Howard of Butler.
The Second Team consists of Sacramento State guard Vinnie McGhee, guard Darion Anderson of Northern Illinois, North Texas guard Josh White, forward Omar Carter of Charleston Southern and Pepperdine forward Malcolm Thomas.
Joining Rudolph as Honorable Mention selections are 2008 opponents Jay Gavin of Marist and Mark Payne of UC Davis in addition to Alvin Abreu (New Hampshire), Nate Blank (Gardner Webb), Kenneth Faried (Morehead State), Rahmon Fletcher (Wisconsin-Green Bay), John Holland (Boston University), Rob Jones (San Diego), Deonte Roberts (Wisconsin-Milwaukee), Gerald Robinson (Tennessee State) and Cameron Wells (The Citadel).
The Greyhounds are scheduled to open the 2008-09 season when they host Mount St. Mary's on Friday, November 14, 2008, to kick off a weekend of festivities to commemorate the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the advent of Loyola basketball.
