Edison, N.J. - Freshman forward Anthony Winbush (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams HS) has been selected as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Co-Rookie of the Week for the final weekend of the regular season it was announced today by the conference office. The honor is the second of the season for Winbush and comes on the day that he was named to the conference's All-Rookie team.
The 6-7 forward completed his weekend by scoring a career-high 17 points to lead the Greyhounds to a 70-63 win at Iona, snapping Loyola's seven-game losing streak. In his previous game, he scored 12 points against Rider for his first career double-figure scoring effort. For the week he averaged 14.5 points while shooting 58.8 percent from the field (10-17), three of four from three-point range and a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line.
After coming off the bench and making five of his seven shots to go along with six rebounds against the Broncs, he earned the start at Iona. He scored seven first-half points before making three-point shots on both ends of a 10-0 run that gave Loyola control of the game with four minutes remaining. He made three three-pointers against the Gaels after having made just two for the entire season entering the contest.
Winbush won his first MAAC acknowledgment following play of the conference's first weekend back in December. He was one of only four freshmen to earn multiple awards during the season and shared the award with Rider's Novar Gadson. The Broncs' Ryan Thompson was named the final MAAC Player of the Week of the season.
The Greyhounds will open play Friday in the opening game of the 2009 MAAC Championship at the Times Union Center in Albany, N.Y. when eighth-seeded Loyola plays No. 9 Canisius at 8:30 p.m. The winner will take on top-seeded Siena on Saturday at 5 o'clock.
