Buffalo, N.Y. - The Loyola men's basketball team squares off against Manhattan this Friday night in the first round of the MAAC Tournament. The Greyhounds, who earned the No. 9 seed in this year's tournament, play in Friday's nightcap at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, N.Y. Game time is slated for a 9:30 p.m. tip.
The Greyhounds and Jaspers split their season series with each team winning on its own floor. Loyola took the first game, 77-70, and went on to win three straight before falling at Manhattan on February 16. Linton Hinds, who scored 18 points with seven rebounds in the win, did not play in Loyola's loss to the Jaspers.
In their two meetings, the Greyhounds have also out-rebounded Manhattan by a 42-28 margin. Loyola is shooting 44 percent from the floor against the Jaspers this season and has eight three-point field goals in those games.
Junior Charlie Bell leads Loyola's scoring attack with 10.5 points per game while freshman Freddie Stanback leads the team in rebounding (5.1 rpg) and three-point field goals (35). Earlier this week, Stanback was named to this year's MAAC All-Rookie team.
The Jaspers, which also landed a freshman on the All-Rookie squad in C.J. Anderson, are led in scoring by Peter Mulligan and his 19.7 points per game. Anderson, like Stanback, leads his team in rebounding with 8.6 boards per game.
The last time Loyola faced Manhattan in the MAAC Tournament was in 1994 when the two teams met in the MAAC Championship Game. The Greyhounds won that game, 80-75, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Loyola's last conference tournament win came in 2001 when the `Hounds upset Fairfield in the first round. 2001 was also the last time the HSBC Arena hosted the tournament.
Friday's game will be the third and final men's basketball tournament game of the night. For times of all other tournament games, click MAAC Tournament Schedule.
