Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Winners of eight of their last 10 and nine of 10 conference matchups, the Greyhounds enter the weekend with a full-game lead over Manhattan atop the MAAC standings. The preseason unanimous selection to win the league, Saturday's opponent Marist is two full games back. Loyola will be sorry to see the month of January go as the 8-2 mark posted by the Greyhounds is the best record for the month since joining the MAAC in 1989-90. But the anticipation of February finds the team ready for the challenge as the march to March continues.
Loyola and Marist were on markedly different paths when they met last month as Loyola had dropped three in a row and four of five and Marist had just captured the Pepsi Marist Classic and was winners of 10 of 12 and rolling. A total team effort behind 33 points from junior guard Gerald Brown offset a triple-double from Marist's Jared Jordan and led the Greyhounds to the 77-69 victory. Senior forward Josko Alujevic tallied 13 and junior forward Omari Isreal scored 10 in his Reitz Arena debut. Freshman Brett Harvey scored six points and handed out six assists.
The road trip continues Monday with a visit to Fairfield, Loyola's first contest against the Stags this season as the two meet twice in a week.
