Edison, N.J. - Loyola freshman guard Justin Drummond (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist HS) has been named the MAAC Rookie of the Week for the third time this season it was announced today by the conference office. He is the first MAAC freshman to be honored three times this season.
After leading the Greyhounds in scoring in his first game of the week, Drummond collected his first career double-double in Loyola's 88-85 overtime victory over Iona. In addition to his 14 points, he recorded career-highs with 10 rebounds and four blocked shots while playing 24 minutes. He made four of his seven shots from the field, two of his four three-point attempts and four of his five free-throw tries.
For the two games, he was Loyola's leading scorer with a 13.0 average while grabbing 8.0 rebounds. He shot 45.0 percent (9-20) from the field, 40.0 percent (4-10) from three-point range and 80.0 percent (4-5) from the foul line for the week.
Earlier this season, he collected consecutive Rookie of the Week awards after scoring a career-high 21 points at No. 15 Georgetown and following that with 17 points at Howard. This is the second straight week a Loyola player has been feted after junior forward Shane Walker earned his second MAAC Player of the Week award last Monday. Freshman guard Dylon Cormier was selected as the Rookie of the Week on November 22 after he scored 20 points in a win over UMBC.
Ryan Bacon of Saint Peter's received the MAAC Player of the Week honor, his first recognition this season.
The Greyhounds (11-10, 7-4 MAAC) finished January with a 7-2 mark for the month and heads into February in a three-way tie for third place in the MAAC standings with Iona and Rider. Loyola will visit the Broncs on Friday at 7 o'clock in Lawrenceville, N.J.
