Edison, N.J. - Loyola junior forward Shane Walker (Northampton, England/Montrose Christian HS) has been named the MAAC Co-Player of the Week for the second time this season it was announced today by the conference office.
Walker led the Greyhounds (10-9, 6-3 MAAC) to three straight MAAC wins during the week, the first time since 1997-1998 that Loyola captured three conference victories in a six-day period. He averaged 13.7 points and 9.7 rebounds while shooting 42.9 percent from the field and 72.7 percent from the free-throw line for the three games.
His free throws with 19.7 seconds left Monday at Saint Peter's tied the score for the final time and the Greyhounds won on a last-second shot to start the week. He finished the contest with team-highs of 19 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots. Thursday in the home win over Manhattan, he scored 13 points with nine boards, both team-bests. And Saturday at Marist he tallied nine points with a team-high 12 rebounds while battling foul trouble for much of the second half.
Through 19 games this season, he is the team leader in scoring (11.1 ppg), rebounding (7.6 rpg), field goals (62), free throws (60), blocks (34) and minutes played (550). The 34 blocked shots is already the eighth-highest total for a season in Loyola history.
Walker also was named the MAAC's Co-Player of the Week on December 13 after he posted back-to-back double-doubles for Loyola during the week. He shared the award this time with Fairfield's Derek Needham and he is just the third repeat winner, joining Siena's Ryan Rossiter and Mike Glover from Iona. Fairfield's Maurice Barrow captured the Rooke of the Week award for the second time in three weeks.
Having won four straight and six of seven, Loyola will host a pair of conference contests this weekend. Siena visits on Friday at 7 o'clock and Iona travels in on Sunday for a noon start.
