Men's Basketball Sweeps MAAC Weekly Honors

Jan. 21, 2008

Edison, N.J. - Loyola men's basketball senior forward Michael Tuck was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the first time in his career and freshman guard Brian Rudolph was honored as the conference's Rookie of the Week for the second time this season it was announced today by the conference office.

The tandem helped lead Loyola to a pair of conference victories as the Greyhounds improved to 5-3 in MAAC play. Loyola has won four of five conference games after defeating first-place Marist 83-71 at home and then winning at Saint Peter's, 62-57, last week.

Tuck recorded the eighth double-double of his career and third this season when he equaled his career-high with 22 points and established a career-best with 16 rebounds at Saint Peter's. The rebound total was the most for a Loyola player in three years, since Bernard Allen grabbed 16 against Manhattan on February 6, 2005. Tuck entered the game shooting 45.8 percent from the free-throw line and made all eight of his attempts to go along with his seven field goals. The effort came on the heels of an 11-point performance in the win over the Red Foxes, making five of eight from the floor with five rebounds. For the week, the Toronto, Ontario, native averaged 16.5 points and 10.5 rebounds while shooting 54.5 percent from the floor (12-22) and 80 percent from the free-throw line (8-10).

In winning his second honor, Rudolph matched his career-high with 12 points while grabbing a team- and career-best seven rebounds with five assists in the win over Marist. He played every minute of the second half as Loyola outscored the Red Foxes 48-35 to overcome a halftime deficit. The New Bedford, Mass., native followed that by handing out seven assists with five rebounds at Saint Peter's. His only five points came in the second half on a three-pointer which gave the Greyhounds the lead for good and two free throws with 8.7 ticks remaining to seal to victory. Seven of Loyola's nine wins this season have come with Rudolph in the starting lineup, including wins in three of four since being reinserted two weeks ago. He previously was honored on December 10.

This is the second time in two seasons that a pair of Greyhounds have been honored in the same week. For the awards given on January 15, 2007, Gerald Brown was named the MAAC Player of the Week and Brett Harvey was named the Rookie of the Week after Loyola recorded a pair of overtime victories at Siena and at home over Niagara.

Loyola hosts MAAC preseason favorite Siena Thursday night at Reitz Arena at 7:00 p.m. in a game that will be televised live on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network. The Greyhounds follow that with a game Saturday at Manhattan that will be carried live on ESPNU starting at 4 o'clock.
