Edison, N.J. - Loyola freshman guard Robert Olson (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Prep) has been named the MAAC Co-Rookie of the Week it was announced today by the conference office. This is the first time that the first-year player has been feted by the MAAC.
Olson entered the week averaging 4.4 points for the season. For the three games the Greyhounds played, he scored 11.3 points per game while shooting 52.2 percent (12-23) from the floor, 45.4 percent (5-11) from three-point range and was perfect on his five free-throw tries.
He scored double figures twice during the week, the first time when he tallied a career-high 20 points to lead Loyola to a 68-61 home win over Marist and followed that with 10 points at Saint Peter's. Against the Red Foxes, he connected on seven of his 11 shots (63.6 percent) and half of his eight three-point tries. He is only the fourth MAAC freshman to reach the 20-point plateau this season.
The versatile player has started 16 of his 18 appearances and has played all three guard positions at various times, receiving starts as both the point guard and at swingman. He is currently averaging 5.6 points per game while playing an average of 22.8 minutes per outing. He is shooting 39.5 percent (34-86) from the field, 42.5 percent (17-40) from three-point range and has missed just three free throws in 18 attempts.
Olson shared the award with Iona's Kyle Smyth while Wesley Jenkins from Saint Peter's was named the MAAC's Player of the Week.
Loyola returns to action later this week with a two-game trip to New York State. The Greyhounds visit Siena's Times Union Center Thursday night at 7 o'clock and then travels for a game at Marist on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
