Edison, N.J. - Loyola College sophomore guard Jamal Barney (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern HS) has been selected as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week for games played between January 12-18 it was announced today by the conference office. Barney received his second such citation in three weeks after averaging 27.7 points while leading the Greyhounds to a 3-0 week.
A 6-3, 185-pound guard, Barney started the week by reaching the 40-point plateau for the second time in 12 days by scoring exactly that many in a home win over New Jersey Institute. In the game, he established school records for free throws made (18) and attempted (22) while also grabbing eight rebounds. In collecting his second 40-point game, he became the first player in Loyola's 99-season history to have two such efforts in a career and is only the third person in the NCAA this season to have more than one 40-point outing.
Two days later in a MAAC road win at Manhattan, Barney connected on a career-high four three-pointers en route to scoring a game-high 21 points. He added eight rebounds in the effort. Two days after that in a MAAC home win over Marist, he scored 17 of his 22 points after the intermission with 11 of those coming in the game's final four minutes to maintain Loyola's lead. He finished the contest with a career-high six assists, six rebounds, three steals and a blocked shot.
For the three-game period, Barney averaged 27.7 points and 7.3 rebounds while shooting 35.0 percent (7-20) from three-point range and 83.9 percent (26-31) from the free-throw line. He also handed out seven assists with five steals. Since moving into the starting lineup 16 games ago, he is averaging 20.7 points and 6.3 rebounds while shooting 45.1 percent (124-275) from the floor and 81.8 percent (63-77) from the line. He recently took over the lead among the conference's scorers, averaging 18.5 points overall and 22.1 in league play.
Barney received his first conference acknowledgement two weeks ago after he posted his first 40-point effort by scoring 41 points in a win at Canisius. It is the fourth MAAC Player of the Week recognition received by the Greyhounds this season after junior guard Brett Harvey (November 17) and sophomore forward Isaac Reid (December 22) were honored earlier in the season. Freshman forward Anthony Winbush (December 8) was named the MAAC's Rookie of the Week as well.
The Greyhounds (8-12, 3-5 MAAC) return to action Thursday night when they host Saint Peter's at Reitz Arena at 7 o'clock. The game will be televised live on MASN.
