Baltimore, Md. - Former Maryland Terrapin Hassan Fofana has decided to transfer to Loyola College in Maryland, following Head Coach Jimmy Patsos who came from College Park last spring. Fofana, a 6-10, 290-pound sophomore at the University of Maryland, has enrolled at Loyola and will be eligible to play during next season's spring semester.
"I trusted Coach Patsos when I went to Maryland," says Fofana. "He feels I'll fit in well at Loyola and I have no reason not to trust him again. He's always been honest with me."
Fofana is a native of Guinea, Africa and his guardian Dr. Gary Gibbons lives in Weston, Mass. Coach Patsos recruited Fofana to Maryland from Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia. In his freshman season at College Park, Fofana played in 28 games, had 16 blocked shots and scored 39 points in a reserve role.
This season, Fofana played in four games and scored eight points, averaging just less than eight minutes per game. Fofana had a career-high 10 rebounds at Virginia on February 4, 2004.
"I'm very excited about coming to Loyola," says Fofana. "I love playing basketball and I'm anxious to play again. Hopefully I'll be able to help the program right away."
"Hassan will get the chance to play a lot of minutes for us," says Patsos. "I think big men need a lot of time to develop, and he will get the playing time he needs. He is also a great person who will fit in well at Loyola both academically and socially. The program is excited to have him and we look forward to working with him every day."
