Loyola 61 – Fairfield 59
Loyola Head Coach G. G. Smith:
On tonight’s game
“It was a real impressive win by our guys, which took a total team effort. They didn’t give up and kept playing. Tyler Hubbard had a great second half and was finally able to make some shots and also had that great save at the end for the winner. Defensively, I thought we played well and were able to hold them to 34%. Fairfield is a great team and we are very familiar with them coming from the MAC and we wish them the best of luck with their season. For us, we are ready for conference play and are opening up at Navy on Wednesday.”
On Loyola’s defensive shuffling
“I wanted to mix it up some more but they hurt us in the zone in the first half and thought it was best to play them straight up in the second. We pressed a little bit but Fairfield was able to break the press.
“They posted up on our guards a lot, which is something we haven’t seen and been able to work on much. After that we adjusted, our guys got tougher and we were able to finally get some stops that we needed late in the game.”
On how Tyler Hubbard has stepped up and has become a leader
“Tyler is one of our best gust guys. Best thing he does is shoot the three and has gotten much better with his ball handling, lateral movement and is a tough kid with a lot of heart. He has gotten better defensively and attacking the basket; I like where he is.
On how the offense has struggled
“We don’t have the same shooting power as we did in the past. We have to do a really good job of running offense, screening and hitting the offensive glass. Cam Gregory is one of our better offensive rebounders. He played 30 minutes and only had 0 offensive rebounds, so for him to score he is going to have to rebound the ball a lot more.
“We have been working really hard in practice on our offense. We have been trying to get more paint touches and get to the free throw line more. I know the stats may not reflect that, however I feel we did a better job today with executing in tonight’s game.”
On how the team is ready moving into conference play
“I like where we are despite our record being 4-7. It’s about winning the conference to get to the NCAA. So our season really starts on Wednesday against Navy.
