BALTIMORE - Following two strong performances to open the 2008 season, Loyola's men's cross country team received a No. 14 ranking in the Mid-Atlantic Region by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The Greyhounds posted a sixth-place finish at Saturday's Navy Invitational, coming on the heels of a freshmen-led second-place output at the Baltimore Metro Meet.
Chris Heibell, who was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's Male Runner of the Week yesterday, led the Greyhounds at Navy with an 11th-place finish.
Loyola was one of only two MAAC teams to be included in the regional polls. Iona is ranked first in the Northeast Region.
The regional ranking marks the third-straight season the Greyhounds have been included in the polls by the USTFCCA. Last season, Loyola set an all-time high with a 13th-place regional mark during the week of October 15, 2007.
Loyola takes a week off from competition before traveling to Minneapolis, Minn., for the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational on September 27, hosted by the University of Minnesota.
