Cross Country Begin 2007 At The Mount

Aug. 30, 2007

Baltimore, Md. - The Greyhound cross county teams travel to Mount Saint Mary's for their first competition of the season this Friday. Loyola will race against The Mount, UMBC, Maryland, George Washington and American University.

The race is just over 5000m which represents a nice start to the year as the majority of men's races are 8000m and women's are 6000m.

"It's a great opportunity for our freshman to get their feet wet at a distance that they are more comfortable with," says Head Coach Rick Woods. "Most high school cross country races are at 5000m so this is a nice welcome to college running for all of our new runners."

On the women's side top returning runner junior Maureen Wynne will sit the race out and the competition for No. 1 on the team at Friday's race should be fierce between sophomore Maureen Wahl who was sixth overall a year ago, junior Alex Salani (10th overall last year) and a spirited class of freshman including Lindsay Wilson, Kate Cervo and Sara Ochs who could steal the show.

Junior Nicole Gilhuley and sophomore Courtney McNamara should also be in contention for top seven spots.

The men will sit their top six runners - seniors Brian Parker, Gian Caccia, juniors Chris Heibell, Keith Forlenza and Timm Woods and sophomore Terry Moran out of this first race to be better prepared for a big competition with Navy in two weeks.

Expect sophomore Dan McDevitt and freshman Tim Burns to be at the front of the pack for the 'Hounds with junior Ryan Santonacita right behind them.

The race is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
