BRONX, N.Y. - The Loyola University Maryland women's cross country team placed third, and the men finished eighth, at the 2011 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y. on Friday afternoon.
Iona swept the men's and women's MAAC titles, winning the women's championship for the seventh-straight season and the men's for the 21st-straight time.
The Greyhound women finished with 79 points, coming in behind first-place Iona (18 points) and second-place Marist (60). The third-place trophy matched the Greyhounds' finish from a year ago and marked the 11th consecutive year that the team has placed in the top-four at the conference meet.
"I loved the way the seniors on this team have raised the bar for us in these Championships," said Woods. "Our expectation coming into this was certainly top-three, we were gunning for second. We didn't quite get there, but I think from now on these seniors have set the standard for what this team should shoot for year-after-year. I'm proud of the girls for the work they have done the past four years."
The men's side finished eighth with 219 points with Iona taking first with a perfect score of 15.
Freshman Brian Grimes completed Loyola's scoring in 66th (30:57.6).
"For the small team we had, they did pretty well," said Woods. "I'm glad to see how well they competed and I'm proud of what the seniors have put into this over the last four seasons. We're looking to build on that in the next few years."
The women's team next competes at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional in Princess Anne, Md., on November 12 at 11 a.m. ET. The men will be at the IC4A meet on November 19 on 10:30 a.m. ET in Bronx, N.Y.
