Dan McDevitt and Kate Cervo shaved enormous amounts of time from their performances last season to lead the Loyola cross country squads at the Paul Short Run Friday morning in Bethlehem, Pa. While leading the men, McDevitt shattered the school record by nearly 10 seconds.
The regionally ranked women's squad placed 38th, while the men finished 40th in the highly competitive field.
McDevitt took off 39 seconds from his finish at last season's Paul Short, placing 78th of 386 runners on the day. The senior co-captain covered the 8K course in a program-record, 24:46. Terry Moran took second for the Greyhounds with a 287th place finish in a season-high 26:05. Kieran Dowling and Matt Hassett also recorded new seasonal bests, placing 325th and 363rd, respectively, in times of 26:21 and 26:59. Dowling and Hassett shaved 37 and 50 seconds, respectively, from their times at last year's race. Also scoring for Loyola was Jonathan Verrengia who crossed the finish line in 373rd place in 27:16.
Cervo placed 148th of 363 competitors, crossing the 6K finish line in 22:19, a season-high and 1:13 faster than the 23:32 she ran at the same course last season. The rest of the top five was not too far behind Cervo as Courtney McNamara rounded out the scorers with a 260th place performance in 23:10. The two through four spots were separated by just 31 seconds with Amanda Bossi (164th, 22:26), Alyssa Doyle (212th, 22:47) and Stephanie Gibney (230th, 22:57) finishing in that order. Bossi nearly shaved a minute off her 23:20 performance from last season.
