Bethlehem, Pa. - The Loyola University Maryland cross country teams competed at one of the largest meet in the nation at the 37th-annual Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa., today. More than 5,000 runners from 230 colleges and high schools were scheduled to compete in races throughout the morning and afternoon.
The women's team finished third out of 41 teams with 176 points in the Brown division and the men were 11th out of 40 teams with 410 points.
"The girls had a pretty good day," said Head Coach Rick Woods. "We are pretty happy about where we are at this part of the season."
"On the guy's side we did fairly well," added Woods. "Everybody has really made progress at this point. So we are pretty please at where we are at heading to the Penn State National Invitational next week and also for the MAAC Championships and the regional meet."
Other MAAC women teams were Canisius (fourth), Rider (26th), Niagara (28th), Fairfield (30th) and Siena (35th). Other men MAAC teams were Fairfield (10th), Niagara (21st), Canisius (25th) and Siena (39th).
"The girls side it looks like they are ahead of everyone right now going into the conference championship," added Woods. "On the guy's side we probably still looking at third or fourth as far as the MAAC teams go. We are in a good position heading into the MAAC."
Leading the way for the women was senior Amanda Bossi, who finished 15th out of 385 runners with a time of 22:19. Junior Emily Doucette was 25th with a time of 22:41.
Other women finishers in the Brown 6k race was Kate Cervo (36th, 22:53), Stephanie Gibney (47th, 23:01), Victoria Szczawinski (53rd, 23:08), Emily Rooney (81st, 23:27), Jackie D'Antonio (134th, 23:55), Kiera Harrison (151st, 24:01) and Gabrielle Cocco (170th, 24:12).
On the men's side, senior Kieran Dowling finished 53rd out of 357 men with a time of 26:24. Senior Stephen Febish was just two seconds behind Dowling with a time of 26:26 to finish 56th.
Other men finishers in the Brown 8k race was Matt Hassett (62nd, 26:31), DJ Puleo (132nd, 27:06), Nick Barletta (144th, 27:11), Tim Burns (174th, 27:30), Eric Loose (217th, 27:51), Sean Barrett (248th, 28:11) and Tyler Ems (321st, 29:19).
In the women's open 6k race freshman Carolanne Chanik was 67th out of 212 runners with a time of 24:06 and senior Jaclyn Feeney was 102nd with a time of 24:06. The men's open 8k race, junior Charles Donnelly was 264th out of 356 runners with a time of 29:03 and junior Ian McArtney was 299th with a time of 29:43.
Other women finishers were Meagan Keane (137th, 25:42), Margaret Larkin (142nd, 25:48), Sara Ochs (164th, 26:09), Claire Reynolds (190th, 27:37), Joanna Pultro (192nd, 28:03) and Katie Smith (203rd, 29:22).
The Greyhounds will compete Saturday, October 16, at Penn State National Invitational in University Park, Pa., before heading to the MAAC Championships in Madison, Conn., on October 29.
