Cross Country Finishes Fifth At Navy Invitational

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Loyola University Maryland men's and women's cross country teams both finished fifth at the Navy Invitational Saturday morning, hosted by the United States Naval Academy.

The women's team came in fifth with 126 points. Host Navy and George Washington both compiled 40 team points to finish tied for first, while Maryland came in third with 85 points. American University finished in a close fourth with 86 points and Bowie State (185 points) took sixth behind Loyola.

"Overall, we've made progrss from last week," head coach Amy Horst said. "The teams raced with greater tactical poise. We're eager to work hard for three weeks before racing again at Lehigh."

Junior Sarah Askine finished just outside the top 20, taking 21st in 24:19.29. Freshman Christina Daniels came in close behind Askine, placing 24th with a time of 24:25.63. Senior Erica Canas (24:37.28, 31st), freshman Mary Sutton (25:15.42, 42nd) and senior Sara Gilson (26:21.83, 56th) also added to the women's team total.

Also competing at the meet were Courtney Wallace (26:47.39, 58th), Kendyl Fahmy (27:34.13, 62nd), Caitlyn McGuinness (27:50.50, 63rd), Gabrielle Silvestri (28:11.35, 64th), Casie Morgan (28:19.79, 65th) and Emily Richards (29:18.37, 69th).

On the men's side, Loyola finished fifth in the team standings, totaling 142 points. Host Navy won the team race with 25 points, while Georgetown took second with 42 points. Fellow Patriot League-foe American University finished third with 84 points and George Washington came in fourth with 94 points. The Greyhounds finished ahead of both McDaniel (187 points) and Bowie State (191).

For the second-straight meet, sophomore Alex Saffadi led the way for Loyola's men's squad, finishing 33rd in 27:12.25.

Juniors Chris Regan, Brad Beard and Kevin Montgomery finished 35th, 36th and 37th, respectively. Regan crossed the 8k finish line in 27:34.29, while Beard recorded a time of 27:37.13 and Montgomery clocked in at 27:50.67.

Freshman Ben Hosford was the final men's participant to contribute to Loyola's team total, coming in 41st in 28:25.75.

Junior Tom Porth (23:52.52, 42nd) and freshman Leo Catinella (29:16.06, 44th) also competed Saturday morning.

The Greyhounds return to action on Friday, Oct. 2, at the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
