Annapolis, Md. - The Loyola men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Navy/Salty Seadog Invitational Saturday morning with senior Dan McDevitt and junior Katie Cervo leading the way for the Greyhounds. Overall, the men's team finished third out of nine teams, while the women took seventh of eight.
Navy won the men's race and were followed by American, the Greyhounds, Johns Hopkins, George Washington, UMBC, Elizabethtown, Mount St. Mary's and Morgan State.
Georgetown won the women's race and was followed by Johns Hopkins, Navy, UMBC, George Washington, American, the Greyhounds and Mount St. Mary's.
McDevitt led the six-runner Greyhounds' team with a 12th place finish, covering the 8K (5-mile) course in 25:24.50. Junior Steve Febish took second for Loyola with a 25th place finish in 26:08.30.
A pair of sophomores, Kieran Dowling (38th, 26:48.20) and Jonathan Verrengia (41st, 26:53.00), followed in third and fourth for the Greyhounds. Just eight-tenths of a second later, senior Terry Moran came in at 26:53.80, good for a 42nd place overall finish.
Also competing for Loyola was junior Tim Burns, who placed 53rd in 27:19.00, Matthew Hassett (50th, 27:14.50), DJ Puleo (64th, 28:07.30), Eric Loose (67th, 28:27.20), junior Sean Barrett (69th, 28:33.80) and Michael Piccard(76th,29:08.80)
Sophomore Stephanie Gibney took fourth for Loyola, crossing the line in the 6K (3.5 miles) at 24:41.99. Rounding out the scorers for the Greyhounds was senior Courtney McNamara in 25:09.24, good for a 46th place finish.
Also competing for the women's team were Sara Ochs (64th, 26:00.08), Jackie D'Antonio (66th, 26:06.11), Emily Rooney (70th, 26:23.05), Margaret Larkin (77th, 27:09.68), Calli Pappas (86th, 27:39.75), Meagan Keane (96th, 28:39.22) and Katherine Ringwood (100th, 29:31.43).
Next Saturday, September 19, Loyola will travel to Riverdale, N.Y., to take on Van Cortlandt Park at the Iona Meet of Champions.
