EMMITSBURG, Md. - The Loyola University Maryland men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2015 season on a muggy and warm Friday afternoon at the Mount St. Mary's Duals.
The meet was scored in a dual-scoring format, with each school receiving a dual-meet score against each of the other opponents.
"Overall, I'm impressed with how well our student-athletes are improving and working together," head coach Amy Horst said. "After a great team retreat and preseason period, they know what they need to do and continue to take the right steps to improve as a team, as well as, individually."
Junior Sarah Askine and freshman Christina Daniels both finished among the top 20, taking 19th and 20th, respectively. Senior Erica Canas finished just outside the top 20, coming in only seconds behind Askine and Daniels and finishing 24th overall.
Other Loyola competitors included Mary Sutton (41st), Sara Gilson (53rd), Courtney Wallace (58th), Caitlyn McGuinness (59th), Gabrielle Silvestri (62nd), Daniella Joyce (63rd), Kendyl Fahmy (71st), Casie Morgan (73rd) and Emily Richards (75th).
On the men's side, sophomore Alex Saffadi led the way for Loyola, finishing 19th overall. Teammates Chris Regan (27th), Ben Hosford (34th), Brad Beard (37th), Kevin Montgomery (40th), Tom Porth (47th), Leo Catinella (49th), Tyler Schoch (51st), Alex Buchholz (54th), Michael Michon (58th), John Miller (59th), Sean Brennan (61st), Ryan O'Donnell (62nd), Edward Leonard (63rd), Brandon Lim (64th), Colin Chandler (66th), Corey Lyden (68th) and Jonathan Mugavero (69th) also competed.
Loyola's men finished 1-3 on the day, behind American (4-0), UMBC (3-1) and George Washington (2-2). Mount Saint Mary's finished 0-4.
On the women's side, the Greyhounds went 1-5 and topped host Mount St. Mary's (0-6). UMBC captured first with a perfect 6-0 mark, followed by George Washington (5-1), American (4-2), Maryland (3-3) and Towson (2-4).
The Greyhounds return to action on Saturday, Sept. 12, traveling to Annapolis, Maryland to compete at the Salty Dog Invitational hosted by the United States Naval Academy.
