SALISBURY, Md. - The Loyola University Maryland women’s cross country team had three athletes earn medals to help the Greyhounds finish second at the Seagull Open in Salisbury, Md., on Saturday morning. The men’s team finished sixth in the season-opening meet for both teams.

The women’s side totaled 46 points, finishing just two points behind first-place Rowan University.

Freshman Jessica Peters led the Greyhounds in her first collegiate meet, finishing sixth overall with a time of 22:50 to earn her first medal. Senior captain Stephanie Gibney and junior Jackie D’Antonio also earned medals by finishing 8th and 9th respectively.

Freshman Anna Bosse also performed well against her first collegiate competition, placing 11th with a time of 23:02.

The Greyhound upperclassmen paced themselves through the first segment of the course, standing in 32nd at the two-mile mark. But Gibney would lead the pack through the remainder of the race, as the group picked up the pace to claim the 8th, 9th, 11th and 12th positions.

“Everything went as planned,” said head coach Rick Woods. “The team really executed properly. The freshmen all came through and the upperclassmen performed very well.”

The men’s team finished sixth of ten teams with 160 total points. Rowan University took first with 40 points.

DJ Puleo led the Greyhounds in 19th place with a time of 27:14 while senior captain Matt Hassett was on his heels in 20th. Captain Ian McArtney also ran a solid race and was the third Loyola runner to finish.

“We were very happy with our first meet,” said Woods. “We have two weeks to prepare for the Navy Invitational which will be another good test for us. We’re going to continue to work and train hard, but this was a very good start to the season.”

The men’s and women’s teams compete at the Navy Invitational on Sept. 17.
