EDISON, N.J. - Loyola University Maryland tennis swept weekly honors, as senior Bobby Gorczakowski and freshman Emily Hughes were named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Week as announces by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.
Gorczakowski had a solid week of competition in singles and doubles for Loyola, going a combined 7-1 in the events, all in the No. 1 flight. He posted three straight wins over No. 1 singles players from Rider, Randolph-Macon and Wagner, and he then teamed with Connor Pietrak to win four doubles matches, including two in conference action.
Hughes did not lose a match in eight combined singles and doubles outings last week, helping Loyola to a 3-1 overall record. The freshman from Haddonfield, N.J., went 4-0 in singles action, winning a pair of MAAC contests. She logged a win over Rider’s Cynthia Vlad on Monday and then closed with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Fairfield’s Alison Radde. She also scored victories over players from Delaware State and Randolph-Macon. In No. 1 doubles action, Hughes teamed with fellow freshman Haleigh Morgus, and the pair won matches against Delaware State, Rider and Randolph-Macon, 8-1, and they also fought off a tough challenge from a Fairfield doubles pair for an 8-6 victory.
