NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Loyola University Maryland sophomore Sabrina Fedele won a pair of matches Saturday in the `B' Flight Singles Draw and advanced to the final of the flight of the Hampton Roads Invitational that will be played on Sunday.
Fedele took care of Delaware's Christina Harrington in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, in the opening match of the draw, and she then squeaked by Old Dominion's Arina Alilueva, coming back from a first-set loss. Fedele fell 6-7 (5) in the first, then won the tiebreaker in the second set, 7-6 (4), and was successful in the supertiebreaker, 10-8, to move on to Sunday's final.
In men's action at the event, Tom Hamm beat Virginia State's Evan Duskin, 6-3, 6-4, in the opening round of the `D' Flight Singles draw before falling, 7-6 (5), 6-3, to George Mason's Nick Barker in the semifinal. Hamm rebounded to claim third place in the flight, beating Norfolk State's Dexter McDowell, 6-3, 6-2.
Harrison Kunkel was defeated, 6-0, 6-4, in the `C' Flight Singles quarterfinals by Ryan Kent of Delaware. The freshman, however, came back to beat Howard's Devon Wharton, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4), 10-8, in the semifinals. He will take on George Mason's Chris Wharton for fifth place on Sunday.
Jackie Lionetta won her women's quarterfinal match in the `D' singles flight, beating Mary Washington's Michaela Dowd, 3-6, 7-5, 11-9. She moved on to the semifinals where she lost, 6-1, 6-1, to Army's Carrie Pope. Lionetta, however, will play in the third-place match on Sunday.
Olivia Ott won her opening match in the `C' singles draw, topping Mary Washington's Casey Malcom, 7-6 (8), 3-6, 10-6, but she lost, 6-2, 6-3, in the semifinals to Villanova's Sydney West. Ott will compete Sunday in the third-place match.
