Tennis Fares Well In Doubles Action At Hampton Roads

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A pair of Loyola University Maryland women's tennis teams finished second and fourth in the `B' Doubles Flight on Friday night at the Hampton Roads Invitational.

Rachel Janasek and Olivia Ott won two matches before bowing out to Arina Alilueva and Nika Khmolovska of the host school, Old Dominoin, 8-4.

The duo defeated Delaware's Kimberly Milla and Olivia Helm, 8-6, in the quarterfinals and then topped Navy's Erin Snook and Noelle Kaufmann, 8-6, in the semifinals to reach the final match.

Tiffany Ash and Sabrina Fedele also played in the `B' Doubles draw, beating Mary Washington's Lindsay Raulston and Michelle Medows, 8-4, in the semifinals before losing to Alilueva and Khmolovska, 8-4 in the semis. Fedele and Ash were then edged by Snook and Kaufmann, 8-3, in the third-place match.

Judy Lite and Jackie Lionetta took fourth place in the `C' Doubles Flight, defeating Allison Solberg and Amy Pettite of Villanova, 8-5, in the quarterfinals before falling, 8-6, to Howard's Talia Johnson and Emily Eck in the semifinals. They then lost, 8-3, to Army's Margaret Iliey and Carly Riney in the third-place contest.

On the men's side, Keishi Goto and Ryan Fitzgerald defeated Patrick Mulquin and Steven Hyre of George Mason, 8-4, in the quarterfinals, but were edged by Delaware's Ian LeBlanc and Jason Derene, 8-6, in the semifinals of the `C' Doubles draw.

Goto and Fitzgerald, however, rallied to win the third-place match, 8-5, over their Loyola teammates, Keyan Sanai and Harrison Kunkel.

Eric Michaelis and Tom Hamm won their semifinals match in the `D' Doubles Flight, defeating Nicholas Pfab and K'wame Tonkins of Virginia State, 8-5. Another Virginia State tandem, Emanuel Haug and Avery Saunders, topped Michaelis and Hamm, 8-6, in the final of the draw.

Singles action will continue on Saturday at the invitational.
