Play Wraps Up At Loyola Men's Tennis Invitational

BALTIMORE - Johns Hopkins University men's tennis pairs took the top four spots at the first-annual Loyola Men's Tennis Invitational on Sunday, wrapping up the competition held at the McClure Tennis Center.

Connor Pietrak and Alex Castro were the highest finishing Loyola University Maryland duo, finishing sixth out of 16 teams.

Castro and Pietrak squared off against Mount St. Mary's University's Mateo DeSomocurcio and Louis Tonon on Sunday morning. The Mountaineers' duo won the doubles match, 8-3, and then claimed the two singles contests. Pietrak took DeSomocurcio to an extended super-tiebreaker after the two split the first two sets, 7-5, 6-7 (3). DeSomocurcio, however, edged Pietrak, 14-12, in the deciding set.

Brett Shriver and Blest Jones came in 10th at the invitational, advancing through the consolation bracket where the lost, 2-1, to Morgan State University's Ramakrishnan and Hoeppner. Shriver won his singles match against Hoeppner, 6-4, 1-6, (10-3).

A pair of Loyola teams faced each other for 11th place and played a doubles match to decide the outcome. Jordan Kuchta and C.J. Cash defeated teammates Greg Olesnycky and Tyler Blessing, 8-4.

Loyola continues its tournament hosting duties next week when it hosts the Loyola Women's Tennis Invitational.
