Marist Tops Tennis In Regular-Season Finales

April 17, 2011

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Marist College defeated the Loyola University Maryland men's and women's tennis teams on Sunday afternoon in the regular-season finales and final tune-ups for the upcoming Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships.

The women fell 5-2, and the men were defeated, 7-0.

Loyola's women will be the No. 3 seed for the MAAC Championships and will play the Red Foxes again in the semifinals. Play begins on Wednesday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

The Greyhound men finished the regular-season in a three-way tie for third place with Saint Peter's and Niagara. Because no tiebreakers will settle the draw, the teams will learn their fate for the four-team MAAC Championships in a Monday coin flip. Two sides will make the Championships as the No. 3 and 4 seeds.

On Sunday, Loyola's women picked up their two points with singles wins by Rachel Janasek and Judy Lite.

The men were swept by Marist, but Pierce Norton and Kevin Zingler did register a victory in the No. 1 doubles match.
