April 7, 2013

BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland men and women's tennis teams fell Sunday against Fairfield University in a hard fought dual match.

The women's team lost in a close battle, falling 4-3 in a match that lasted six and a half hours in length. After claiming the early doubles point with victories by #1 Haleigh Morgus and Emily Hughes and #3 Scarlett Hoy and Tiffany Ash, the Greyhounds kept it interesting through the final six singles matches.

Hughes played out a great day of tennis as she won both her matches, winning in singles 7-5, 6-1 over Fairfield's Alison Radde, and winning in doubles with teammate Morgus, 8-6. Ash, as well, won both of her matches, defeating Maggie McLaughlin, 6-4, 6-3, and in doubles with Hoy, 9-8.

Hahn and Hoy fell short in two great singles matches in the #1 and #4 spots as both matches went into extra sets.

The lose moves their record to 10-3 for the season.

The men's team found themselves in a tough matchup against Stags, losing 7-0 Sunday, moving their record to 9-4 for the season. Senior captain Bobby Gorczakowski and freshman Connor Pietrak started the day off with a thrilling 9-8 doubles victory, but the Greyhounds couldn't hold on to Fairfield as they took the rest of the matches for the day.

Both teams head on the road for their next three matches. First stop is Wednesday as they travel to Emmitsburg, Maryland to face Mount St. Mary's. Start time is set for 3:30 p.m.
