BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland's men's and women's tennis teams surrendered just one set in a non-conference match against Rider University on Monday, April 6, and both squads defeated the Broncs, 7-0.
Loyola's women took all six singles matches in straight sets after winning the doubles point with ease. Amanda Lanciano and Ania Krawiec defeated Michelle Caravaglio and Kerrin Toner, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles, and Megan Hahn and Olivia Ott shutout Danielle Scurdato and Montana Morris, 8-0, at No. 2. Emily Hughes and Haleigh Morgus then defeated the No. 3 team from Rider, Leonora Paul and Annette Frankowski, 8-1.
Hahn was a 6-2, 6-1, winner over Toner, at No. 1 singles, and Lanciano was a 6-1, 6-0 victor against Scurdato at No. 2.
Hughes did not drop a point, 6-0, 6-0, and beat Caravaglio at No. 3, and Morgus topped Aleesha Rousse, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4. Krawiec was also a winner by shutout, 6-0, 6-0, against Morris, and Nicole Eberle downed Paul, 6-0, 6-1.
On the men's side, Greg Olesnycky and Connor Pietrak won a tight match, 8-6, over Chanton Phan and Ahmed Al-Shawafi at No. 1 singles, while Reid Burch and Brett Shriver eased to an 8-1 win over Chris Popso and Jeremy Van Herwarde at No. 2. Alex Castro and John Ferruzzi finished doubles with an 8-1 win over Adam Levi and Matt Begley at No. 3.
In singles action, Olesnycky beat Popso, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 1, and Pietrak was a 6-4, 6-3, winner at No. 2 against Al-Shawafi.
Burch defeated Phan, 6-4 in the first set before falling 2-6 in the second. The Loyola freshman, however, came back to win the super-tiebreaker, 10-7, to take the match for the Greyhounds.
Jordan Kuchta was a 6-3, 6-0, winner against Begley at No. 4, and Blest Jones won, 6-1, 6-0, against Van Herwarde, at No. 5. Shriver completed the Greyhounds' sweep with a 6-1, 6-0, win at No. 6 against Agaazi Berhane.
