Men's Tennis Rallies For Thrilling Win Over Lafayette

March 30, 2014

SPARKS, Md. - Connor Pietrak overcame a second-set loss to beat Lafayette College's Brandon Goldstein, clinching a 4-3 Patriot League victory for the Loyola University Maryland men's tennis team on Saturday night at the Greenspring Racquet Club.

The Loyola women's team was also victorious, sweeping the Leopards, 7-0.

The men's teams split the first two doubles matches, each winning by 8-4 margins as Pietrak and Alex Castro picked up a victory for the Greyhounds over T.J. Morgan and Gavin Studner in the No. 3 match.

A critical point would come down to the No. 2 doubles match where Loyola's Greg Olesnycky and Jordan Kuchta were locked in a tight contest with the Leopards' Brian Pinkard and Jake Lazer. Lafayette's pair came away with an 8-7 win, taking the tiebreaker in a marathon 14-12 with each point having set-point implications.

Lafayette carried a 1-0 lead into singles play where Castro quickly evened the match at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-0 in over Lazer in the No. 6 flight. Olesnycky and Kuchta then won their decisions at No. 4 and 5, each winning 6-4, 6-3, to push the Greyhounds in front, 3-1.

The Leopards rallied with a 6-0, 6-4 win by Brian Stefanowicz over Lisco at No. 3, and Pinkard slipped past Harrison Kunkel, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5) to square the match at 3-3.

Pietrak beat Goldstein 6-2 in the first set before falling 1-6 in the second. The Loyola sophomore responded with a 6-4 win in the third set, clinching the victory for the Greyhounds.

Loyola's women won the match in less dramatic fashion, although two of the doubles matches finished 8-6 in the Greyhounds' favor. Megan Hahn and Olivia Ott were winners at No. 1, and Haleigh Morgus and Emily Hughes took a decision at No. 3 by that score. Katelyn Hissong and Ania Krawiecalso won 8-2 in the second flight.

Hahn used extra points in her No. 1 sinlges match to beat Jordyn Spellberg, 7-6 (7), 7-5, and Hissong strechted her match to a tiebreaker win, 7-6 (2), 3-6, (2) over Rocine Moschella at No. 3.

Morgus, Krawiec, Ott and Hughes were all straight-set winners at No. 2, 4, 5 and 6 singles.

Loyola's matches on Sunday against Lehigh University have been postponed indefinitely, so the Greyhounds will be back in action on Friday, April 4, against Delaware State University in a women's match at 3 p.m. on Butler Courts.
