BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland men's and women's tennis teams both scored 7-0 victories over visiting Rider University on Saturday afternoon to open 2011 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action.
The women won every match, while the men won the doubles point with victories in No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, and they then swept the six singles matches.
Rachel Janasek and Joy Johnson teamed in No. 1 singles for the Loyola women to shutout Tricia Ashmore and Marly Roche, 8-0. The Greyhounds then had a pair of 8-1 wins in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Scarlett Hoy and Judy Lite defeated Mallory Gabaravage and Danielle White in the second flight, while Andie Keyser-Baker and Tiffany Ash handled Alexa Manforti and Jaclyn Giameeo in third.
In singles action, Janasek led off with a 6-0, 6-4, victory over Roche in the top slot, and Hoy defeated Ashmore, 6-0, 6-2, in No. 2 action.
Johnson topped Gabaravage, 6-0, 6-1, and Lite beat White, 6-1, 6-0. Ash took care of Kim Leder, 6-1, 6-0, and Keyser-Baker finished off the match with a 6-2, 6-2, win over Manforti.
Loyola's men did not have much trouble with the Broncs either. J. Pierce Norton and Kevin Zingler beat Rollie Malfitano and Matt DiMartino, 8-3, in No. 1 singles, and Bobby Gorczakowski and Jamie Russo topped Rob Olsen and Milo Milosovici, 8-3, in No. 3. Rider scored its lone victory of the day in No. 2 doubles, as Drew Laverty and Chris Esposito beat Keyan Sanai and Dan D'Agostino, 8-3.
The Greyhounds rolled through singles play with six straight-set wins.
Sanai beat Malfitano, 6-0, 6-1, in No. 1, and Norton defeated Ryan Carpenter, 7-5, 6-1, in No. 2 singles. Zingler topped Laverty, 6-2, 6-2, and Gorczakowski knocked off John Spellman, 6-2, 6-1, in No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively.
Loyola closed the match with a 6-2, 6-1 victory by D'Agostino over Olsen and Connor Lisco's 6-0, 6-0, shutout of DiMartino.
The men travel to Western New York on Sunday to continue MAAC action at Niagara.
