FLUSHING, N.Y. - Women's tennis continued their strong opening to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference season Friday afternoon, with a 6-1 win over Manhattan at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
The `Hounds extended their winning streak to four games and their MAAC streak to two while moving to 9-2 on the season and 2-0 in the conference.
Loyola fought off the Jaspers in doubles, with the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles teams both earning 8-5 wins to clinch the point. Rachel Janasek and Kerri Swan defeated Lili Johnson and Stephanie Tsao in the No. 1 spot and Joy Johnson and Andie Keyser-Baker defeted Hilary Valenzuela and Christina Puleo in No. 2 doubles.
Judy Lite and Scarlet Hoy finished off the first part of the match with an 8-1 win over Christina Ton and Nora Sacchi Hulton in No. 3 doubles.
Loyola then went 5-1 in singles, allowing just a No. 4 singles win to Manhattan with Keyser-Baker falling 6-3, 6-3 to Puleo.
Janasek won the No. 1 singles tilt, downing Johnson 6-4, 6-2. In No. 2 singles, Swan defeated Valenzuela 6-3, 6-3 and Johnson won her tilt against Ton 6-2, 6-3.
Lite got past Tsao in No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-3, and Hoy closed out the match by going 6-0, 6-0 against Hulton Sacchi.
MAAC action continues this weekend with both the men and women taking on Fairfield and Saint Peter's on the road. The teams will face the Stags Saturday afternoon and continue Sunday afternoon in Jersey City, N.J.
