Men's & Women's Tennis Sweep La Salle

BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland's men's and women's tennis teams swept La Salle University by scores of 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at Butler Courts.

The men's team needed tiebreakers in the No. 1 and No. 1 doubles matches to defeat the Explorers, but from that point forward, the Greyhounds dominated the match.

Pierce Norton and Kevin Zingler defeated Fernando Tovia and Chris Berenato, 9-8(5), and Dan D'Agostino and Keyan Sanai followed with a 9-8(4) win in No. 2 doubles against Trevor Donovan and Joseph LaBate. Bobby Gorczakowski and Jamie Russo completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 victory over Hunter Selman and Mikel Kosich.

In singles action, Sanai started with a 6-2, 6-3 victory Donovan in the top spot, and Norton cruised past Selman, 6-0, 6-1.

Zingler beat Bernato, 6-3, 6-2, in No. 3 singles ,and Gorczakowski used a tiebreaker in the first set to top LaBate, 7-6(2), 6-2. D'Agostino lost the first set to Tovia, 7-6(6), but he rallied to win the match, 6-2 and 10-4 in a supertiebreaker. Connor Lisco finished the match out with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kosich in No. 6 singles.

The women had an equally successful Saturday afternoon, sweeping the Explorers.

Rachel Janasek and Joy Johnson kicked the match off with an 8-2 victory over Leah Garrison and Chloe Trave in No. 1 doubles. Judy Lite and Scarlett Hoy won 8-0 in No. 2 doubles against Kiara Smith and Allison Amrein, the same score by which Sabrina Fedele and Tiffany Ash topped Pearl Wilkins and Courtney Babo.

Janasek beat Smith, 6-0, 6-2, in No. 1 singles, and Fedele was a 5-7, 7-5, 10-1 winner in the No. 2 slot. Hoy defeated Amrein, 6-0, 6-1 in the third flight, and Johnson topped Trave, 6-4, 6-1, in No. 4.

Lite was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Babo in No. 5 singles, and Ash finished the match with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Wilkins.

Loyola is back in action on Sunday when it hosts Saint Francis (Pa.) at 12 noon on the Butler Courts.
