BALTIMORE - The Loyola Unviersity Maryland women's tennis team swept doubles play, and the Greyhounds won four singles matches Wednesday to defeat visiting Morgan State University, 5-2, in non-conference play.
The Bears, however, edged the Greyhounds men, 4-3, despite Loyola winning the doubles point via a sweep.
On the women's side, Loyola opened the match up, 1-0, after winning all three doubles matches. Megan Hahn and Amanda Lanciano paired for a 6-3 win at No. 1 over Chelsi Russell and Danielle Thompson. Emily Hughes and Haleigh Morgus then defeated Chloe Kabamba and Kayla price, 6-4, at No. 4.
In sigles action, Hahn delivered a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Price at No. 1, while Morgus led Russell, 4-1, in the opening set of the No. 4 match before the Morgan State player defaulted due to an injury.
Clark then rallied to beat Plummer, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 5 singles, and Eberle was a winner by default at No. 6.
The Loyola men picked up the match's opening point with a sweep of doubles play.
Blest Jones and Brett Shriver knocked off Felix Andre and Treajh Ferguson, 6-4, at No. 1 doubles, and Connor Pietrak and Alex Castro teamed for a 7-5 win over Jeremy Field and Arjun Ramakrishnan at No. 2.
The Bears, however, rallied for the match victory win wins in the one, two, four and five singles slots.
Reid Burch won his eighth-straight singles match with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Andre at No. 3, and Jones remained undefeated in spring singles action, beating Krusinski in a super-tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-3, (10-1).
Both the Loyola men's and women's teams are back in action starting at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 18, against La Salle University.
