FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Loyola University Maryland men's tennis opened its 2016 spring slate on Sunday afternoon, but the Greyhounds fell, 8-1, to Mary Washington University.
Blest Jones rallied to pick up the Loyola point, winning the No. 6 singles match, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, over Derek Hagino.
Jones and Brett Shriver opened the match at No. 1 doubles, dropping the contest to Stratton Gilmore and Brandon Griffin, 8-5; Eric Horowitz and Nolan Perugini topped the Greyhounds' Connor Pietrak and Alex Castro at No. 2 doubles, 8-2. Jordan Kuchta and C.J. Cash played No. 3 doubles for Loyola, falling, 8-5, to Alex Cragg and Patrick Hughes.
Gilmore was a 6-4, 3-0 (default), winner over Kuchta at No. 1 singles, and Griffin defeated Tyler Blessing, 6-2, 7-6 (2), at No. 2.
Horowitz was a 6-0, 6-1, winner against Reid Burch at No. 3, and Pietrak lost, 7-6 (4), 6-4, to Hughes. Castro extended Matt Miles to a third set at No. 5, but Miles finished with a 7-6 (7), 5-7, 7-6 (1) win.
