BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland men's and women's tennis teams opened their 2012 spring schedules on Friday night with sweeps of St. Francis (N.Y.) University. The men were 6-1 victors, while the women prevailed 7-0.
The Greyhounds women earned the doubles point as Rachel Janasek and Olivia Ott defeated Arianne Van Sluytman and Ewa Opala, and Jackie Lionetta and Rachel Bergeron stopped Natasha Edwards and Jovanna Bojinovic. The Terriers defaulted at the No. 3 doubles slot.
Janasek won at No. 1 singles, while Sabrina Fedele topped Van Sluytman at No. 2. Tiffany Ash was a winner at No. 3, and Judy Lite earned a No. 4 victory. Scarlett Hoy finished the sweep with a win at No. 5 singles, and Ott earned a default win at No. 6.
Meanwhile, on the men's side, Pierce Norton and Kevin Zingler defeated Tita Mba and Danhalidi Robinson in No. 1 doubles, and Bobby Gorczakowski teamed with Patrick Glaessner to win at No. 2 doubles, securing the doubles point. Martin Grunin and Daniel Gonzalez, however, edged Loyola's Connor Lisco and Ryan Fitzgerald at No. 3.
Robinson used a super-tiebreaker to score the Terriers' lone point at No. 1 singles over Keyan Sanai. Norton defeated Mba at No. 2 singles, and Zingler beat Tsang in the third position.
Gorczakowski edged Grunin with a tiebreaker in the No. 4 match, and Lisco and Harrison Kunkel defeated Gonzalez and Alex Tokarz in the final slots for the victory.
