Cronin, Mixa and Morris Earn MAAC Weekly Honors

Nov. 9, 2011

EDISON, N.J. - Junior Brennan Morris and sophomore Caitlin Cronin have been tabbed the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s and women’s swimmers of the week, respectively, while sophomore Elle Mixa was selected as the Women’s Diver of the Week, as announced today by the league office.

Morris is earning his third-straight men’s swimmer of the week honor – and 12th of his career – after winning three more individual events to remain undefeated in individual events this season. Against Johns Hopkins and Saint Francis (Pa.), Morris won the 200-yard backstroke, 400-yard individual medley and the 1650-yard freestyle, running his streak of undefeated individual victories to nine straight. He was also a member of two of Loyola’s winning relay teams – the 400-yard freestyle and 800-yard freestyle.

Morris’ 400 IM time of 3:54.05 meets the NCAA B cut and ranks third in the NCAA this season, while his winning time of 15:34.22 in the 1650-yard freestyle ranks fifth in the country. He also touched first in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:49.24, and as a member of the 400-yard freestyle (3:09.67) and the 800-yard freestyle (6:57.98). His 200-yard medley relay team finished second (1:35.82) and his 400-yard medley relay finished third (3:28.81).

Cronin earned three first-place finishes this weekend against Johns Hopkins and Saint Francis (Pa.). She also added four more top-three finishes throughout the meet. Cronin won the 100-yard freestyle in 52.35 and the 200-yard freestyle in 1:54.72, while she was a member of Loyola’s winning 400-yard freestyle relay (3:36.56). She also finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (24.49) and as a member of the 200-yard medley relay (1:50.41), while she was third in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:40.33) and 800-yard freestyle relay (7:58.22). Her times are all ECAC A cut times.

This marks Cronin’s first weekly award this season, while it is the second time she has garnered the accolade throughout her career.

Mixa swept the individual diving titles against Johns Hopkins and Saint Francis (Pa.). Mixa won the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 253.05 and the 3-meter diving with a score of 214.35. Her 1-meter diving score was just over two points shy of Megan Sterback’s program record of 255.23 from 2006.

This marks the second time Mixa has been named the MAAC Diver of the Week award in her career and the first time this season.

Loyola will return to the pool this weekend, heading to Washington, D.C., to face Howard. Events are scheduled to begin 1 p.m. on Saturday.
