CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Loyola University Maryland sophomore Ben Cono has been named the Corvias Patriot League Male Swimmer of the Week for the second time in three weeks and freshman Lindsey Staszewski was included on the League’s Honorable Mention list, as announced by the conference office Monday.
Against Boston College and Johns Hopkins, Cono won the 100 breaststroke in an NCAA “B” standard time of 55.35 to break Loyola’s all-time school record in the event, as his mark betters Matt Fralinger’s time of 55.55 from 2011. His time is also the fastest in the Patriot League this season and ranks among the top-25 nationally.
In the 200 breast, the Smithtown, New York, native picked up his third title in 2:02.40 to remain undefeated in both of the breaststroke events. He also came in third in the 200 IM (1:57.70) and joined with Zeke Wolfgang, Rich Mueller and Madison Hardimon to finish second in the 400 medley relay (3:27.34).
This season, Cono has captured eight individual titles and one relay title, while he was named the Corvias Patriot League Male Swimmer of the Week on October 12 and November 2.
Staszewski is also undefeated this season, as she’s won all three 3-meter diving events she’s competed in. At the Thomas Murphy Invitational, she swept the boards for a second time this season, winning the 1-meter (241.80) and three-meter (242.76) dives.
Loyola’s women will return to action on Friday when the squad travels to Mount St. Mary’s for a 6 p.m. meet. Both teams will return to Mangione Pool on Saturday, Nov. 14, when Loyola hosts Howard and VMI.
