CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Loyola University Maryland sophomore Ben Cono was named the Corvias Patriot League Men's Swimmer of the Week on Monday following his four victories in the Greyhounds' opening meet of the year.
Cono, who transferred to Loyola from North Carolina State prior to the season, won four individual events Friday and Saturday as the Greyhounds faced American University in the two-day event.
The Smithtown, New York, native won the 50-yard breaststroke (26.13), 100-yard breaststroke (56.62), 200-yard breaststroke (2:05.80) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:56.71) in his first intercollegiate event as a Greyhound.
The sophomore beat the field to the wall in the 50-yard sprint by nearly two seconds and then posted victories of more than three, four and four seconds in the respective events.
Cono's 100 breast time ranks as the fourth-fastest in Loyola history, while his 200 breast checks in at fifth best.
The award is the first this season for a men's swimmer and the third since Loyola began competing in the Patriot League in 2013.
