BALTIMORE, Md. - After finishing third at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships last season, the Greyhound men's and women's swimming and diving teams start the 2005-2006 season this Saturday afternoon with the annual Green & Grey Meet at the Fitness and Aquatic Center. The meet begins at 1:00 p.m.
Entering his 14th season as the Greyhound head coach, Brian Loeffler will see his team compete against each other in preparation for the season opener against Navy and George Washington in two weeks. "This is an excellent opportunity for me to see the team prior to our first competition on the 15th," Loeffler said.
The Greyhound women finished in third place in the MAAC for the fourth straight year and return several outstanding members of that team from last season. Seniors Jayme Adams and Melissa Birkenmeier have been selected to serve as this year's captains. Birkenmeier has been part of three record-setting relay teams during her first three years at Loyola, while Adams has been a strong contributor for the Greyhounds in the freestyle events.
Last season, the men's team finished in the top four teams in the conference for the 12th time in the last 14 years. However, the Greyhounds will be missing a key part of last year's team in Marko Turcinov , who is serving as a graduate assistant for the Greyhounds after graduating last year. The Greyhounds will have plenty of swimmers to pick up for the record-setter, including Ryan Reeser , who enters his junior season in 2005-2006 with a good chance to set several records.
Reeser has already set several individual and relay records during his first two years at Loyola and finished second at the MAAC Championships in the 500 free last year and will have a chance to eclipse those records over the next two years.
The meet will take place at the Fitness and Aquatic Center as part of the Family Weekend festivities. "This will be the third year in a row we have had our intersquad meet during Family Weekend," Loeffler said. "It gives the parents, especially of the freshmen, a chance to meet parents of the other team members."
Loyola opens its home schedule on Friday, October 28 against Providence at 5:00 p.m. in the first of eight regular season home meets.
