Scholz Edged By .09 For Final Spot In 100m Freestyle Final

BEIJING, China - Loyola sophomore swimmer Phil Scholz set a personal-best time by over three seconds in the first heat of 100-meter freestyle qualifying at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing's Water Cube on Friday morning (Beijing time).

His time, however, was .09 off the eighth and final spot that qualified for the evening's final. Russia's Alexander Chekurov placed eighth overall in qualifying with a time of 1:04.02 to earn the last spot in the final.

Scholz shaved three seconds off his previous best time in the event, improving from 18th to ninth in the world standings in the event.

He continues his Paralympics schedule on Friday evening (Baltimore time) in the preliminaries of the 100-meter backstroke.
