BEIJING, China - Loyola sophomore swimmer Phil Scholz finished fifth in the 400-meter freestyle at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing's Water Cube.
Scholz clocked a time of 4:57.21 in the event final to record his best finish in a final of the games. The time was Scholz's best by over five seconds in the event.
In his first event, Scholz finished eighth in the 100-meter butterfly.
"I went in with more confidence so am definitely feeling a little bit stronger," Scholz said. "My two best events are out of the way so I'm hoping to get personal bests and make it to the finals in my remaining three events."
In Thursday's qualifying for the 400-meter freestyle, Scholz placed third in his event with a time of 5:02.07 to place third in his heat and qualify fifth.
Scholz continues his program tonight at 9:29 p.m. (Baltimore time) in the preliminaries of the 100-meter freestyle, his third of five events at the games.
