CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Loyola University Maryland swimming and diving senior Erin Shea has been named to the Patriot League All-Academic Team, as announced by the League office Monday morning. Shea was one of 10 female student-athletes to be honored by the Patriot League for their work in the classroom and in the pool.
A member of all four of Loyola’s relay teams that broke school records at the Patriot League Championships last week, Shea also advanced to the finals of the 100 fly and 200 fly at the championships.
The Elkridge, Md., native joined with junior Brianna Keelan, junior Erin Calderoni and senior Caitlin Cronin to break the program’s 200, 400 and 800 yard freestyle relay records. The quartet combined for fourth-place finish and a time of 1:34.39 in the 200 yard freestyle to replace Megan Royer, Caitlin Cassidy, Mary Henkels and Lauren Mari’s time of 1:35.81 from 2009. Their fifth-place finish in 3:25.52 in the 400 free relay bettered Cassidy, Emily Benton, Mari and Tori Kamauff’s time of 3:29.31 from 2009, while they finished sixth in the 800 free relay with a time if 7:27.39, smashing Melissa Birkenmier, Megan Shovlin, Benton and Kamauff’s previous school record time of 7:42.00 from 2009.
Shea also teamed with sophomore Lizzie McKenna, freshman Tara Mulligan and Cronin to knock off Courtney Trivino, Kim Krzazcek, Cassidy and Mari’s school record of 3:51.89 in the 400 medley relay. McKenna, Mulligan, Shea and Cronin combined for a seventh-place finish and a time of 3:50.70.
In individual events, Shea finished 15th in the 100 fly with a season-best time of 52.51 and took 16th in the 200 fly in 2:11.12.
Throughout the season, Shea won six individual events and was a member of seven of Loyola’s winning relay teams.
A biology major minoring in business, Shea carries a 3.56 grade-point average and was one of just two seniors named to the All-Academic Team; Lafayette’s Lauren Berry was the other. They were joined by juniors Melissa Parker (American), Kristen Barta (Army), Tara Boyle (Bucknell), Lauren Perry (Bucknell) and Sami Wary (Colgate), and sophomores Stephanie Nasson (Boston U.), Courtney Patterson (Lehigh) and Ellen Bradford (Navy) on the All-Academic Team.
Bradford was named the Patriot League Women’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
To be eligible for the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Patriot League awards, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen are not eligible for this honor.
