Brown Earns Fifth Patriot League Male Diver Of The Week Honor

Feb. 4, 2014

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Loyola University Maryland Michael Brown has been named the Patriot League Male Diver of the Week for a fifth time this season, as announced by the League office Monday. Senior Elle Mixa and freshman Aidan O’Hara were also recognized among the league’s honorable mention performances.

Brown broke the Mangione Pool record in the 1-meter diving event and became Loyola’s first male diver to qualify for the NCAA Zone Championships in a dual meet with New Jersey Institute of Technology on Friday night.

The Timonium, Md., native narrowly missed breaking Terry DelPrete’s 28-year-old school record of 338.90 from 1985, recording a score of 335.85 on the 1-meter boards. That mark bettered Rider’s Paul Apostolakis’ pool record of 334.45 from 2010 and made him the first male diver in program history to qualify for a national championship event since James Tynan competed in four-straight at the Division II level from 1972-75.

The 1-meter title marked the seventh time this season that Brown has won the event, while he also claimed his fourth 3-meter diving title (246.83) to sweep the boards for a fourth time this season.

Mixa also continued her dominance on the boards in a dual meet with Mount St. Mary’s on Friday. In nine meets this year, the St. Petersburg Beach, Fla., native, has swept the 1-meter and 3-meter events six times. She won her seventh 1-meter title on Friday with a score of 241.49, while she claimed her eighth 3-meter title with 229.95 points.

In the pool, O’Hara led the way with four victories on Friday, touching first in the 100 back (54.64), 200 back (1:59.00) and the 400 IM (4:20.08). The Sterling, Va., native was also a member of the winning 200 medley relay team (1:39.99).

Loyola will return to the pool on Wednesday, Feb. 19 when it travels to Annapolis, Md., to begin competition in its inaugural four-day Patriot League Championships.
