BALTIMORE - Junior Brennan Morris broke the all-time school record in the 500-yard freestyle Friday evening to lead the Loyola University Maryland swimming and diving team in its Metro Atlantic Conference Opener against Iona, Marist and Saint Peters at the Mangione Aquatics Center.
Morris, a two-time MAAC Most Outstanding Performer of the Year, clocked in with a time of 4:26.08 to replace Jacob Drannan’s time of 4:31.15 atop the program’s record boards. With the win, Morris remained undefeated in individual events this season, extending his win streak to 12-straight events.
Morris was also victorious as a member of Loyola’s 400-yard medley relay team and 800-yard freestyle relay team. The Greyhounds’ 400-yard medley relay team combined for a time of 3:28.88, as Morris led off the relay with a time of 23.96 and junior Jeffrey Rowe swam second, turning in a time of 50.06. Senior Patrick Mukri finished in 26.85, while senior Tony Florida closed out the event with a time of 58.48.
In the 800-yard freestyle relay, Mukri, Morris, freshman Armand Aquirre and Florida finished first in 6:59.12.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Rowe touched first in 21.12, while sophomore Julien Brice was second in 21.48.
On the women’s side, sophomore Caitlin Cronin was just shy of Caitlin Cassidy’s school record of 23.91 in the 50-yard freestyle, as Cronin finished second in 23.94.
Following the first day of competition, Loyola’s men’s team leads Iona, 72-35, Marist, 59-50, and Saint Peter's, 82-25. The Greyhounds’ women lead Iona, 63-47, and Saint Peter's, 91-13, while they trail Marist, 83-27.
The Greyhounds will return to action tomorrow, with the first session beginning at 10 a.m. The second session will begin at 3 p.m.
