MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Loyola University Maryland swimmers McKenzie Coan, Ben Cono and Alyssa Gialamas competed alongside a star-studded field at the Arena Pro Swim Series opener at the University of Minnesota’s Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center in Minneapolis Thursday and Friday.
Olympic champions Missy Franklin, Katie Ledecky, Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps highlighted the nearly 50 USA Swimming National Team members competing, while a number of other U.S. Olympic medalists were included in the field.
Cono, a sophomore transfer from NC State, qualified for the finals of the 100 breaststroke after finishing 14th with a time of 1:03.76 in Thurday’s preliminary round. He finished the finals in 13th place with an Olympic Trial Qualifying time of 1:03.43.
Cono also turned in an Olympic Trial Qualifying time in the 200 breast, finishing 12th in the finals with a time of 2:18.10.
In the 100 back, Gialamas set a new s5 American record by touching in 1:42.05. She also finished the 200 free in 3:26.10.
Coan also competed in the 200 free, finishing in 2:33.19, while she turned in a time of 34.56 in the 50 free.
The Greyhounds will return to the pool on Friday, Dec. 4, when they host Iona, Marist and Saint Peter’s in the two-day H2Ounds Invitational at Mangione Pool.
