Johns Hopkins Leads After Day One Of Thomas Murphy Invitational

BALTIMORE, Md. - Sophomore Brad Test took first place in the 50-freestyle and helped Johns Hopkins University earn a win in the 200 free relay as the Blue Jays jumped out to an early lead after the opening session of the Thomas Murphy Invitational at Loyola College's Mangione Aquatic Center on Friday evening.

The Blue Jays hold a 59-20 edge over Howard University while leading the host Greyhounds by a 56-18 margin. Johns Hopkins has a 63-24 cushion ahead of Virginia Military Institute following the opening session.

Meanwhile, on the women's side, the Blue Jays are ahead of Loyola and Howard following the opening session, holding a 45-20 advantage over the Lady Bison and a 48-26 lead over the Greyhounds. Loyola leads Howard by a 44-26 margin following the opening 10 events.

Test helped the Blue Jays jump out to the early advantage by swimming the lead leg in the 200 free relay team, which finished in first with a time of 1:27.32. He also earned a victory in the 50-free with a mark of :21.48. As a team, the Blue Jay men won four of the five men's events in the opening session.

Junior Ryan Reeser helped the Greyhounds by taking second place in the 50-free behind Test and swimming the final leg of the 200 free relay team, which earned second place with a time of 1:27.94.

Brendon Geoghagen earned first place for VMI in the one-meter diving event by scoring 126.00 points while teammate Kyle Madden followed with a score of 119.17 points.

Freshman Kristin Cunningham guided the Blue Jay women to the early advantages by finishing first in the 50 free with a time of :24.82 while helping Johns Hopkins finish second in the 200 free relay behind Howard, which earned the win with a time of 1:40.83.

Freshman Clare Ostrom led the Greyhounds by finishing second in the 1650 free with a mark of 18:40.46 while sophomore Tess Drazdowski earned third place with a time of 19:03.74. Juniors Michelle Ryan and Nori Skoda finished in third and fourth place in the 400 individual medley.

Nazinga Murphy led the Lady Bison in the opening day by finishing second in the 50 free while swimming the lead leg of the victorious 200 free relay.

The two-day invitational continues on Saturday with a pair of sessions beginning at 10:00 a.m. The afternoon session follows at 3:00 p.m.
